Holidays, and Souvenirs!!!

Family day caching

 Sansue and I decided to go grab some caches on Family day, Feb 17th. We went to Brunswick Point, which is the most westerly non island part of the Ladner area of Delta. To the north is the Canoe Pass, part of the South Arm of the Fraser River where the river runs between Westham Island and the mainland just before it flows into the Gulf of Georgia. It was a nice day and we walked about 9km in total. We found a total of 23 Traditionals, and 1 Earthcache, and DNF'd 2 caches.

 I really felt there should have been a cache here. But there was not!! lol

There was Eagles everywhere along the Dyke, very cool to see them up close.

 This was a cool hide. The rocks were over top of this cache, but it was the perfect hidey hole!! I wont tell you the name of the cache so as not to spoil it for others. Almost felt like it was buried but, it was not. Ammo cans are Awesome!!!

And in Magic News....... 

 This month I stepped down as the President of the Fraser Valley Magic Circle, where I was President for the last 4 1/2 years. I was given an award for all my years of commitment to the club, as the President, and also a very cool watch, that is made out of wood. I will stay on the Executive as the Secretary, as I have always enjoyed helping out, and this is a great club to belong to.

Leap Day caching and souvenir

 It's 2020, which means it's a Leap Year, which also means we have an extra day this year that we have not had since 4 years ago!! Plus to celebrate this extra day of caching, Groundspeak has made a special Leap Day souvenir. I had a show over in Marpole and I grabbed a few caches while on the way over there. 

 This was one that I found, can you see it??? It has a difficulty of 3 1/2 stars, But I was able to grab it quite quick, although others had a difficult time.

I also found one in this Free Library stand. I have found several in Free Library's all over the city, and in other towns. Always great caches.

After my show, Sansue and I also went and grabbed a cache called "Leverage" which was a cache similar to one I had done several years ago called "Chopsticks not Included"

We enjoyed doing it as a team. Much better with more hands to help.

I got a total of 6 caches on Leap Day. 

YAY FTF!!!
Got a notification about a new cache published close to my house today(March 1st), so I raced out the door and went and found it. It was a cool cache called Port Moody City Gym - League Series
This was my 1st FTF of the year, but my 384th First to Find in total!!

Heading to Las Vegas!!

We had planned to head to Vegas this month, and I made a list of about 78 caches to work on grabbing while there with Sansue, some of the caches on the list where ones I have already found during previous trips, but thought she might enjoy them.
EDIT NOTE: We have had to postpone our trip because of what is going on in the world right now with this ugly Virus. I hope everyone out there stays safe, and this is over soon!!!

Global Caching and Upcoming trip

Global Geocaching-Vancouver

I recently came across a cache called "Global Geocaching-Vancover" and I did a cache called "The World Cache" several years ago that was of a similar style of cache. You have to connect with cachers in other parts of the world and swap information with them. It took me over 5 months to get the final co-ords to "The World Cache" and make the find for the smiley!! You can read more about that cache in my past blog "HERE"
As far as this one goes, it did not take as long, in fact within 2 weeks I had the final co-ords and went and made the find while in the area, grabbing some other caches with Susan.

No Caching or Snow Caching!!

Didn't do much caching in the first week of January, as we had a fair bit of snow in a short period of time. We usually don't get much snow in this area, but we got hit hard for a few days. The good thing is in about a week it was all gone...cache on!!!

Virtual Souvenirs
On February 2nd a new virtual souvenir (the second one of the year) was available for getting a cache on this day. It is Groundhog day, but it is also called Palindrome day as it is the second day of the second month of 2020 or also written as 02.02.2020 and if you write it backwards it stays the same.
This will be the second Souvenir of the year!!

There hasn't been an eight-digit palindrome like this one since 11-11-1111, 909 years ago. There was a slightly different eight-digit palindrome on Nov. 2, 2011 (11-02-2011), but while that date was a palindrome in Canada and the US, where dates are expressed as month/day/year, it didn't translate to one in countries that use the day/month/year system. It's unlikely many people alive will see the next palindrome of this type, which will arrive in 101 years, on 12-12-2121. But those who use the month/day/year/system will get one in that format in just less than 2 years from now on December 2, 2021, which is 12-02-2021.

PATHTAGS

So recently I decided to get my own pathtag designed and ordered. I commissioned my caching friend Kathleen (Vanislelady) from the island to design it for me. I then ordered them so I will be able to place them in caches as well as trade with others. Plus I hope to give some away at Geowoodstock XVIII which is coming up in August, here in Canada for the first time. Here is the design, and they look much sharper in real life.

VEGAS BABY!!!

In March Sansue(Caching name) and I will be taking a trip to Las Vegas (Love that place) and of course some geocaching will be happening. I have already started to make my list of all the caches I would like to get, as well as some others I have already gotten on past trips, that are very cool and think that she would like to see.

Las Vegas Strip caches

Last year when I was in Vegas in February, I wanted to do the Red Rock Canyon Loop to get the earthcaches that where there to complete a geochallenge, but it had snowed in and around Vegas (a very rare thing) and they closed the road to the loop as they did not have any way of removing the snow off the roads, so this trip I am hoping to get some of those.

This is an overview of the caches I would like to do on this trip but I always plan for more and get what I get!!! Need to leave some time for shows and shopping also. And if we don't get them all, I will be back!!

Thanxgiving Cache

I did a cache back on April 26th 2019 called Festivus for the Rest of us! (A Holiday Challenge) when

I did a day trip down to Washington through Anacortes and down through Deception pass, and down to Whidbey Island. I did the trip so I could get several earthcaches, so I could log a challenge cache that I found down in Las Vegas, when I was there in February called Earthcaches: Challenge of the Century I was gonna do several Earthcaches in Vegas, but the road was closed to Red Rock Canyon loop.

I found 29 caches on that day trip to Whidbey Island, with several being Earthcaches, so I had over 100 Earthcaches found on my profile, to log the Nevada cache, but now I had to finish finding the caches to fulfill the requirements to log the Holiday Challenge from Washington. Today (Feb 8th) I found the last Holiday Cache I needed to log the Holiday Challenge cache I found during that trip. Lol, Boy, that was a mouthful to explain.

Back to the Island

Vancouver Island

I had a show in Sooke, over on Vancouver Island on New Years Eve, and a couple days later on January 2nd, I had a show in Nanaimo, so we were able to grab a few caches while over there. Just recently I took my girlfriend out to a couple of caches near my house, as she was interested to know more about it.
She enjoyed it and downloaded the app. I took her with me to Vancouver Island. There was a few caches that I have been meaning to get for some time such as "Magicman65 Tribute Cache" which is a puzzle cache made by my friend Brett Taylor (The GO! Team) where you had to do a magic trick online to get the final co-ordinates. Thanx again Brett for the Tribute, and the awesome cache!!!

Also on the trail to that cache was a challenge cache named T300 Challenge Cache", and to log it you needed to complete enough caches in one month to add up the Terrain ratings to 300. I was pretty sure I met the requirements to log it, as I did, 200 caches in 1 day years back, and all of them were a Terrain of 1.5 or more.

We also did a virtual cache called "Jan's Patchwork Fence"

I used to co-own a cache that was at this location years ago.

Made a short trip thru Chemainus (I lived there for 7 years) on our way up island on New Years Day. Grabbed a few caches while there, and I showed Sansue some of the cool Murals that has made this town Famous.

I was also able to grab a puzzle cache called "Sudoko Oh No!" while in Nanaoose Bay/Parksville area. I had finished the puzzle back when I lived on the island over 6 years ago, but never got around to finding it. lol
Also found a cool Virtual cache on the way thru Nanaimo, called Petroglyph Provincial Park
In total I found 13 caches consisting of 1 Event, 2 Virtual's, 3 puzzles, and 7 Traditionals

I received my monthly edition of FTF(Geocaching Magazine) and was reading it online when I noticed an ad for FTF playing cards. This month, they had some cool Magic dude advertising the cards. They are great cards, and recommend them to anyone looking for some cool giveaway's or swag.

I might have to order more cards, I also have 100 pathtags ordered. Geowoodstock XVIII is coming up in August, here in the Fraser Valley, BC., you can register at "Geowoodstock XVIII". I will be performing 2 shows as well as some close up magic during registration to amuse the long line ups. I will probably pass out some cards and tags. Speaking of giving stuff away, just before Christmas someone on one of the FB geocaching pages posted his collection of geocoins. I asked for his address, and I sent him some pins, tags, and a cool looking geocoin that I had an extra one of, to add to his collection. No reason, just felt like giving!!

 Also I noticed this blog is my 95th blog, and at my 60th I  had a contest and I gave away some cool swag and geocoins. I will do that again at my 100th Blog. Keep watching for it!!!

So I happened to look on the geocaching website, and noticed my stats on the fizzy chart, I only need 5 more to complete it. I haven't really focused on finishing it, I just figured it will fill in eventually. lol
Maybe I need to look for some specific caches to complete it. Road trip anyone??

Sansue and I just recently did some caches at Burnaby Lake, but I only found 5 and DNFed 6!! Someone needs to do some maintenance I think. lol

TB Security Breach

In January 2020, Facebook was littered with upset geocachers. There was a new bully on the internet and they were giving out Travel Bug codes for FREE Discovery on a Face Book group. I know what you're thinking, "How Terrible!". And it was terrible. The community was in an up roar. Groundspeak told cachers just to delete these bogus logs and lock their TB's so they can not be logged thru the FB group. Luckily none of my TB's were listed as I have not seen any bogus logs as of yet. Some people just don't know how to play the game. People have logged caches before also without actually going to the cache. We call those people Armchair cachers. Simple rule is: go find the cache, log the cache!! Same with TB's, find or see the TB and log it!!! Rules don't get much simpler than that. Not sure why someone would want to cheat as they are only cheating themselves.

Road trip!!!

Kamloops Trip

FTF's are cool!!

I was looking to see what caches I was gonna get on my trip to Kamloops and noticed a puzzle cache called "Balance is Key" in Merritt. I seen that it was a newly published cache that had not been found yet, so I added it to my list of caches to get on the way to Kamloops.

I came thru Merritt and made the short side trip to grab this cache as it seemed like it would be a cool gadget cache. I was right and I was also the First to find it(Or at least get in to it, lol) Very cool cache at the side of the road, out in the open. But the trick was not to find it, but to figure out what you had to do to get at the logbook. Took me a few minutes but figured it out and made the find. YAY FTF!!!!

While in Kamloops I went to a very cool, well organized TB hotel called "Get some info Find a Bug"

 

 It was so well organized inside and easy to swap Travel Bugs, or coins.

 Another cool cache I found while in Kamloops was called "The Box Store Boundry", it was at the Edge of the property of a large chain store. It was a boundary marker, that came out of the ground to reveal the cache.

On the trip home the next morning, I was able to grab several caches including 2 more Gold Country Caches. These are always awesome caches as they take you to beautiful places and you can earn cool geocoins by getting the stickers from inside the caches.You can earn them by finding 24 Gold Country caches and submitting the stickers into the Gold Country Geotourism Team.  I have already earned 2 geocoins, and working on my 3rd!!

I love the Gold Country Caches.

Also got a couple more FTF's here at home. Both of them you had to listen to a YouTube story for about 20 minutes each, to get all the answers to some questions to get the numbers for the
co-ordinates. Thanx Keats for these awesome caches!! So far up to date I have 383 FTF's and a total of  4917 finds!!! This should change a bit before the New Year.

Almost got another FTF on my way to perform in Ladner. It was called "Millenium Trail: My Journey Begins"
I got there about a minute after another cacher was the First to Find. Still nice to meet other cachers at caches and events.

I was looking at a post about Lab Caches and the "Map" and I have not found any of these types of caches yet, but will go try one in the New Year.

I will be heading to Vancouver Island at the end of the Year to do a couple of shows and I will make sure to get a few caches along the way. There is a few on the island that I've been meaning to get. More of that in January's Blog.

Cool Caches

Recently in the Geocaching blog they published the Top 10 caches in the world that are added to geocachers list's everywhere. The cool thing about the list is 2 of the caches I have already found. There is a few on the list that I will put on my bucket list and grab when I am ever near those locations. you can find the list here: "The Top 10 caches added to Lists"

I have also been looking at other caches that have gotten placed on my "Must Do" list and one of them is called "Smile" Ammo Can in the Woods
It is down in Longview Washington but it is a huge built Ammo Can that you can actually walk into.

Speaking of Cool Caches last month I did some caches including one called "Rainy Day cache" which was near some cool art on the sidewalk. But you could only see the art when it was wet. I was there on a nice day so I was not able to see the art. I was back near there on a day it was raining so I swung by for a quick look. (It uses special paint that only shows when its wet)

Disneyland and Hollywood caching

I went to Los Angeles for a quick trip during the long weekend in October, and was able to do a bit of caching while there.
I did a Virtual cache at Disneyland called "Disney's Horseshoe Review"

I also did a cool cache in Hollywood while there called "Put that in your Pipe and Smoke it"

Geochallenge of the Month

So almost every month Joshua Johnson "The Geocaching Vlogger" puts out a challenge to do something specific to complete a challenge. It may be as simple as find a certain type of cache or something harder. At the end of the month if you have submitted a video or picture showing that you have completed the challenge, your name goes into a draw for the chance to win some cool geocoins. About a year ago I won the second place coin. In September the challenge was to find a cache while using some form of transportation that you have never used before. Here is the "Video" of me and Oliver completing this challenge. In October the Challenge was to find a cache with a difficulty or Terrain value of 4 or higher. Oliver and I completed this challenge fairly quickly in the month and you can watch the video of that "HERE"
At the beginning of November Joshua did a video to announce the 3 winners for October, and how exciting it was to see that I won 1st place!!! YAY, now I will have 2 Geovlogger coins!!

If you support him you get a lot of extras, plus you have access to the geochallenge of the month sooner.

Streaking while caching

STREAK WEEK......

A new souvenir this past month became available called "Streak Week"
Introducing Streak Week! Challenge yourself
to go on 7-day geocaching streak! Find a cache every day from August 25 – 31 to earn a souvenir. Can you beat the streak?
What is a geocaching streak?
A streak means you logged a geocache, an Adventure Lab Cache, or attended an Event Cache every day for a consecutive number of days. You can track your streak on your Geocaching.com statistics (Premium feature). My best Streak is 400 days in a row, so I was sure I would be able to complete this one. Lol
I did the 7 day streak and ended it with a very Electrifying cache called "A shocking Discovery"

 Oh, ok, all good, got the cache!!! Good thing the lid to the box was labeled. Very creative cache hidden in plain sight.

Multi cache
I tried to find "South Vancouver Historical Tour" a few weekends ago, as I was in the area and had a bit of time before I needed to be at my destination. But after collecting all the info, I put one number in wrong as I misread the info. Very important thing to pay attention to everything as it took me to someone's front yard instead of on the trail I needed to be on which was just about 30 feet away from where I was. I contacted the CO and he led me in the right direction and I realized I used a wrong number, so now I will need to go back there when I am over on that side of town again. Lesson learned: Double check and read correctly. LOL

I didn't think correctly, like this guy is. LOL. PS this is where I made my mistake and used the wrong info, as I didn't read the clue correctly, and used the wrong date on the plaque beside him. Oooooops....

September Geochallange

Oliver and I completed the September Geochallenge early in the month. This months challenge was to find any cache, BUT, you had to find it with a means of transportation that you have never used before. Oliver rode his bike and I rode his scooter. Kelowna caches
I had a corporate show in Kelowna on the weekend so of course I was able to grab a few caches along the way and also while in town including 2 new Virtuals

 Welcome to Peachland.

 Very cool cache inside a Rock.

 It was so warm and sunny in Kelowna while I was there, so I was able to grab some nice caches including Kelowna's first Virtual at the summit of Knox Mountain.

 

Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley is such a beautiful place to visit and cache.
